Description

The Stanton Lacy War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in a churchyard, dating from around 1920, with later additions made after 1945 and in 2005.

Constructed from ashlar and rough-hewn limestone, the memorial features a wheel-head cross with a sword in relief on its north side, facing the church. The cross and its tapered shaft rise from a tapered plinth that sits on a two-stepped base. The north face of the monument displays the wheel-head in rough-hewn limestone, while the cross arms and rectangular shaft are made of ashlar. Below the sword in relief on the lower body of the shaft is an inscription filled with lead lettering that reads: "TO / THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN PROUD AND / GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF STANTON LACY / WHO IN THE GREAT / WAR WITH GERMANY / 1914 – 1918 / GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR / KING AND COUNTRY." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the plinth and the riser of the upper step. The sides and back of the monument are plain, except for the east side of the plinth, which lists the dates 1939 – 1945 and the names of those who fell in the Second World War.

Additionally, a bronze plaque set in the gravel surround commemorates Able Seaman William Charles Williams, who was awarded the Victoria Cross. This plaque, added in 2005, reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY / ABLE SEAMAN / WILLIAM CHARLES / WILLIAMS V.C. / ROYAL NAVY / WHO GAINED HIS COUNTRY’S / HIGHEST AWARD FOR VALOUR ON / 25TH APRIL 1915 AT GALLIPOLI / BORN IN STANTON LACY / 15TH SEPTEMBER 1880."
