Description

The pig sty, located approximately 25 metres to the north-west of Acorn Cottage, was built around 1818. It is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Neo-Egyptian style. The structure has a square base topped with a pyramid. The base is coped and has a low entrance on the east side. The pyramid has tall rectangular openings and is crowned with a dressed stone pyramidal finial that rests on short corner piers. On the east side, there is a stone plaque inscribed with the words "TO PLEASE THE PIGS." This pig sty is part of a series of unusual Gothic out-buildings created on the Tong Estate by George Durant the younger, who died in 1844. Acorn Cottage, which is not listed, is also dated to 1818. Other out-buildings in the vicinity include a cow house to the north of Acorn Cottage, a fowl house to the west of Vauxhall Farmhouse, and kennels to the east of the Red House.
