Description
14 and 14A The Square is a shop that was originally two dwellings. The oldest part dates back to the early 18th century, with a later addition to the left likely from the early 19th century. The left section is rendered over brick and features a plain tiled roof. It has two storeys and a five-window range with expressed architraves around the renewed windows. The right section, dated 1713, is also rendered over brick and has four storeys with a two-window range, featuring casements with transoms in moulded architraves. It has angle quoins and parapet eaves. The shopfront is continuous with the former house to the left, which was completely rebuilt in the 1960s and is not included in the listing. The original number 14 was extended to the rear to create additional shop space and retains a purpose-built top-lit fashion showroom from around 1920 on the first floor. This showroom has a round arched ceiling with a long gabled skylight, a decorative tri-partite gable end window above the stairs, and a deep moulded cornice. The attached "Wightman Hall" is excluded from this listing.
