Description

This is a barn and adjoining pigsties located approximately 10 meters west of Hogstow Mill. The barn dates from the mid-17th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 17th or early 18th century and further changes in the mid- to late 19th century. It features a timber frame set on a coursed rubblestone plinth, with red brick nogging and additions, topped by a plain tile roof. The structure consists of three framed bays, with 19th-century additions at each end.

The north-west front includes honeycomb brick vents for the loft, two boarded loft doors, and two small ground-floor windows on the left. To the right, there are three boarded doors and a pair of large boarded doors positioned off-center. The flanking additions have segmental-headed boarded doors with lozenge-shaped honeycomb vents above, and additional honeycomb vents are present in the right-hand gable end.

The adjoining pigsties, likely from the mid-19th century, are constructed of uncoursed rubblestone with red brick dressings and have a plain tile lean-to roof. They feature three segmental-headed entrances, each with chamfered reveals to the right, although the pen walls have been demolished.

Inside the barn, there are 17th-century square panelled cross-frames, with three panels extending from the sole-plate to the wall-plate, and collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts. A former 17th-century end truss has a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and v-struts. There is also a likely 18th-century inserted cross frame with a tension brace and additional trusses. The barn is part of a complete mill group that includes the house, the former mill, and the stables.
