Description

The Old Shop is a cottage that was later used as a shop and has now returned to domestic use. It dates from the early 17th century and was extended in the late 17th century, with further additions and alterations made later. The building is timber framed with painted brick infill and some partial rebuilding, and it has a corrugated iron roof. Originally, it had a single-cell plan with an end baffle entry, which was extended by one short bay to the left in the late 17th century. The structure is one storey high with a gable-lit attic.

The front features vertical posts, and the roof has collar and tie beam end trusses with V-struts from the collars. There are mid-19th century segmental-headed casements on either side of a roughly central segmental-headed boarded door, with a brown brick ridge stack directly above. A 19th-century brick lean-to is attached and projects from the right gable end.

Inside, there is a massive central chimney stack with an infilled inglenook fireplace and a wooden lintel in the right ground-floor room. This room has a chamfered spine beam and an oak winder staircase located behind the stack. The left room features flat heavy joists. The roof has a single-purlin design in three bays, with collar and tie beam trusses and short straight windbraces. The left bay, which is a later addition, is shorter and at a higher level, with a low doorway cut through the tie beam of the original gable end. The floors are wide boarded oak floorboards.
