Description

Wern-las is a farmhouse, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later additions and alterations. It features painted brick on a rubblestone plinth and has a slate roof. The building is L-shaped, consisting of a hall range on the left and a gabled cross-wing on the right. There is a 19th-century full-length outshut at the rear of the main range. The main range has two storeys, while the cross-wing has two storeys and a gable-lit attic.

The main range is adorned with a dentilled eaves cornice and toothed bands at the first floor and attic of the gable, which continue around to the right side. There are two early 20th-century casement windows on each floor of the main range, with those on the first floor positioned directly below the eaves. The gable features one window on both the ground and first floors, the latter having an infilled segmental head, and a late 20th-century casement in the attic. The entrance to the main range is through a ledged and grooved door located under a lean-to brick porch at the angle with the cross-wing. A yellow brick ridge stack is positioned directly above, creating a baffle entry.

At the rear, vertical timber posts are visible above the outshut. Inside, the ground-floor room of the cross-wing has twin chamfered spine beams and heavy joists, while the right ground-floor room of the main range features a deep-chamfered spine beam with stepped stops. There is a winder staircase leading to the first floor in the main range, and another staircase from the first floor to the attic in the cross-wing, which has collar and tie beam roof trusses. A later early 20th-century brick lean-to at the rear of the cross-wing is not of special architectural interest.
