Description

This is a house dating from the 16th century, substantially refronted in the mid-18th century. It is a timber-framed building, now faced in brick.

The main elevation, facing Belmont, is three storeys high and five bays wide, with a pedimented central bay. A central doorcase features side window lights set within a rusticated architrave and a pediment. Above the doorway is a twelve-pane sash window, flanked by blind side lights. The windows in the central section have stuccoed surrounds with emphasised voussoirs, while the twelve-pane sashes in the outer bays are set within flat-arched heads of finely gauged brick. A moulded eaves cornice runs across the pediment. Fine cast-iron rainwater goods are present. A further bay to the right, extending across the ground and first floors, is partially incorporated into the structure of the adjacent properties at Nos 5 and 5A Belmont.

On the Belmont Bank elevation, earlier timber framing is exposed, showing close studding with a jettied first floor and ogee-arched tension bracing. The gable over the collar is panelled in a herringbone pattern and carved with a vine-leaf motif. Inserted casement windows are visible on each floor.
