Description
Affcot Manor is a manor house that dates from the 16th century or earlier, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from sandstone rubble, timber-frame and plaster, roughcast, and painted brick, topped with a plain tile roof. The building features a rubble stack with spurred brick shafts and caps at the angle of the cross-wing, and an early 20th-century brick ridge stack on a rubble base at the center.
The manor has an L-shaped plan, with 18th or 19th-century wings extending to the north and east. The west front is two storeys high with a cellar, and includes a single-storey and attic section. The fenestration is scattered, with the south cross-wing featuring an inserted rubble panel on the ground floor. Above this, there is rubble with chevron-braced framing and a 4-light window that has two early and two 20th-century panels of lattice glazing, set over a chamfered, cavetto-moulded wall plate. A jettied tie beam with moulding and a Tudor rose is flanked by stylized lions, leading to a gable with cusped concave lozenge bracing, carved bargeboards, and a later finial.
To the left, there is a gabled half-dormer with a 19th-century 4-light casement window above an early 19th-century 8/8 sash window under a gauged brick flat arch. The left side also has 20th-century fenestration and an entrance, with a 19th-century light in the gable. The right side is roughcast, featuring an early 19th-century 8/8 sash window on the ground floor, with two 6/6 sashes above, and scalloped moulded bargeboards with a finial.
The early 19th-century rear wing has two tiers of 8/8 sash windows, with late 19th-century windows on the first floor and similar bargeboards. The right side includes a part-glazed 6-panel door with a swagged fanlight under a semi-circular arch, set in a late 19th-century brick porch with a hipped plain tile pentice roof. There is also scattered 19th-century fenestration and a 6-panel door with panelled reveals in a simple doorcase leading to the right range, along with a further single-storey wing that has a brick end stack. The interior has not been inspected.
