Description
St Winefride's Convent is a former pair of houses, now serving as a convent, located in Shrewsbury. The buildings date from the mid-18th century, with early 19th-century additions, and may contain an earlier timber-framed core in one section. They are constructed of brick and topped with Welsh slate roofs.
The principal building, known as No.1, is a two-storey structure with attics and features three bays, including an additional gabled bay on the right. The central entrance has an eight-panelled door set within a Gibbs surround and a pediment, flanked by four-pane sash windows with cambered arched heads. The rear elevation mirrors this arrangement. The gabled range to the right has 12-pane sash windows with cambered heads on each floor. The building has gable end stacks.
Adjacent to this is a cross range that appears to date from the mid to late 18th century, possibly incorporating an earlier structure, evidenced by some coursed stonework in the wall facing St Chad's Churchyard. This two-storey range features three windows facing the courtyard, a four-panelled doorway to the left, and four-pane sash windows.
To the north, an early 19th-century addition once occupied separately consists of a two-storey, three-window range with a central pedimented bay that is advanced. This section has a blocked central door flanked by narrow eight-pane sash windows, with 12-pane sashes in the outer bays, all featuring flat-arched gauged brick heads and plain overhanging eaves.
Inside No.1, the original staircase remains, showcasing moulded tread ends and turned balusters.
