Description
The balustraded upper terrace to the west of Condover Hall, along with its urns, bastion garden house, and two flights of steps leading to the lower terrace, consists of terraced gardens and associated structures built mainly between 1868 and 1872, likely designed by George Devey, incorporating earlier elements.
Constructed from sandstone ashlar and rubble with limestone dressings, the balustrade runs parallel to the south-west elevation of Condover Hall and measures approximately 85 meters in length. The terraced lawns slope downwards, with a second wall located about 30 meters to the west. The terraces are connected at both the north and south ends by steps and low walls, featuring a south-east bastion and an exedra to the north.
The top terrace features an open balustrade with bottle balusters and rectangular piers, which are flanked by round-arched openings and C-shaped brackets. At the north end, there are two short flights of steps leading down to the lower terrace. The square bastion at the south end has splayed corner buttresses and includes a rib-vaulted tunnel that passes through, flanked by round-arched four-bay arcades on either side, serving as a garden house or grotto. Additionally, on a bank immediately to the east, there is an inscribed stone tomb slab commemorating Catherine Owen (1703-1721). At the north end of the terrace, the exedra features a raised semi-circular platform with a garden seat, ending in square corner piers with scrolled brackets, which is accessed by a wide flight of three steps from the south.
