Description
These cottages, located 5 metres behind numbers 2 to 7 Raven Lane, date from the 17th century to the early 19th century. They are constructed of brick and feature a steeply pitched composite tile roof. The cottages are two stories high and have a single-window range with a 2-light casement under a timber lintel. The eaves are dentilled brick, and there is a central blocked entrance that has an early 20th-century 2/2 sash window under an oak lintel. To the right, there is a smaller early 20th-century 2/2 sash window, and to the left, a 19th-century 2/2 horizontal casement under a timber lintel.
The 17th-century section has a timber-frame and brick construction with a steeply pitched composite tile roof and a 3-bay plan. It is two stories high and has a 2-window range featuring 18th-century fixed lights with broad glazing bars under a chamfered plate, flanking a later central opening. There are two plank doors, one with a light, and fixed lights with glazing bars on either side, one of which has a small metal casement.
Inside, the left-hand unit has had its first floor removed and features queen strut trusses with ogee stop chamfers on the tie-beams, above what are likely 19th-century partition walls. The right-hand unit contains a large bread oven. This section is from the 19th century, with rubble on the ground floor and brick above, and a 20th-century composite tile roof. It is also two stories high and has a single-window range with a 2-light metal casement in an altered opening. The central entrance is a 19th-century plank door in a chamfered frame under an oak lintel, with a light to the left featuring broad glazing bars under an oak plate. The interior of this unit is largely intact. There is a further range from the 19th century, built of brick with slate roofs and brick ridge stacks. The cottages are included for their group value.
