Description
The Cantlin Stone and Botfield Cross is a memorial stone and cross located in Bettws-y-Crwyn. The stone was erected in 1691, while the cross was added in 1858. The memorial features an irregular limestone boulder inscribed with "WC/DECSED HERE BURIED/1691 AT BETWS." The limestone Celtic cross has carved roundels and trails, and it stands on a chamfered stepped square base. At the time of the last survey in November 1984, the cross was noted to be displaced and fractured.
This site traditionally marks the location where William Catlin, a pedlar visiting local farms, collapsed and died in 1691; he is believed to be buried in St Mary's Churchyard. The cross was erected by Beriah Botfield, a botanist, bibliographer, and Member of Parliament for Ludlow. A wooden fence, which is not included in the listing, now surrounds both the stone and the cross.
