Description
This is a chest tomb located 10 metres south-east of the chancel of the Church of St Andrew in Hope Bowdler. It is made of ashlar and dates from the early 19th century. The tomb features a shallow pyramid lid with moulded edges. The side panels are inscribed and have a semicircular border with scalloped sunburst incised ornament in the spandrels. It includes fluted corner piers with insets and Doric columns, and a plain plinth inset below the panels. The tomb commemorates Robert Heynes, who died in 1831, and his wife Martha, who died in 1870.
