Description
White Gables is a disused railway station located on Station Road in Whittington, dating from around 1848, with later additions and alterations. The building features stuccoed stone or brick on a moulded ashlar plinth and has a slate roof adorned with cusped barge-boards, pointed finials, and pendants, all in the Tudor Gothic style. It is one storey and attic high, with a central gable that rises to two storeys, and a separate lower roof pitch to the right of the gable.
The windows are cast-iron mullioned and transomed types with latticed lights set in moulded stone surrounds. There are two windows to the left of the left entrance and one above in a gabled half-dormer. To the right of the roughly central projecting gable, there is a three-light window, with paired mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor and an oriel window with turned wooden balusters at the corners on the first floor. The right gable end features a four-light mullioned and transomed window in a projecting bay, also with twisted balusters at the corners.
A gabled porch to the right includes a round-headed arch with Gothic tracery in the spandrels and corner posts that resemble 17th-century newel-posts. The sides of the porch have round-arched blind arcading with splat balusters and herringbone decoration on the gable. The doorways have moulded stone surrounds, with a 20th-century nail-studded plank door on the right and a similar surround with a 20th-century glazed door on the left.
At the top of the building, there is a central purple engineering brick ridge stack with a cruciform shaft and ashlar capping. A similar stack to the left originally had twin diamond-shaped shafts, but only one remains. There is also a late 19th-century single-storey addition to the left.
