Description

This is a Grade II listed railway station featuring a Gothic architectural style. The entrance front is symmetrical, with advanced gabled bays at each end and a central porch. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick set on a brick plinth, topped with steeply pitched slate roofs adorned with crested ridge tiles. The advanced bays have bargeboards, pierced quatrafoils, finials, and collared pendants on the right. Brick stacks are present, and broad blue brick bands run at window head and sill levels, leading to pointed arches on the advanced bays and porch. The stone window dressings include rusticated architraves and foliate capitals on the centre mullions of the two-light windows, with one-light windows on the outer bays and sides of the advanced bays. The windows feature Victorian sashes.

The central porch is advanced, with a blue brick arch supported by detached columns that have foliate capitals and large stone bases. It includes a broad double doorway with a stone lintel, "Gothic" panel doors, and a fanlight. Stone steps lead up to the entrance, flanked by later stone-capped splayed side walls with foliated capitals.

Inside, the ticket office boasts an interesting interior with original fittings, including tongue and groove panelling. Iron tension bars are visible in the trusses, which feature cusped spandrels. Additionally, there are notable platform seats with cast iron arborial bench ends.
