Description

This is a substantial, classical-style Baptist church with associated railings, dating to the contemporary period. The front of the church is a two-storey brick structure with a basement, designed with a five-bay classical layout. The lower storey is channelled freestone, while the front is brick with a Dutch gable, fronted by a tetrastyle Corinthian pedimented portico. The entablature features a moulded architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a dentil modillion cornice. A rose window is set within an oculus to the pediment, with keystones marking the cardinal points. The three central bays above feature similar oculi above classical plaques. Corinthian pilasters define the bays of the front elevation, separated by a band at first-floor level. The ground floor is of channelled freestone, with cambered arches, moulded keystones, and recessed square-headed doorways, containing panelled double doors. Broad steps with stone-capped side walls lead to the front entrance. The building returns one bay to either side, featuring balustraded parapets. Round arched windows are present on the first floor, framed with lugged architraves, keystones, and bracketed sills. Recessed windows with similar detailing are found on the ground floor. A plain basement is present, with simple windows. Side elevations are of six bays, constructed of Flemish bond brick on a brick plinth, with Corinthian pilasters rising from piers. The roof is slate, lacking a modillion cornice to the entablature. Gallery windows correspond with the staircase bays, and are similar to the square-headed windows below, all featuring side bar glazing. Plain basement windows are also present. The rear of the building is gabled, with low parapets and a returned entablature. A three-storey, two-window double-pile service block of symmetrical design adjoins the rear, with gabled slate roofs, raking gable parapets on kneelers, and brick stacks. The windows of the service block reflect the main building's design, but are simpler. Doorways lead to cantilevered stone stairs. The interiors of offices and schoolrooms retain contemporary fittings.

Associated with the church are contemporary spear-pointed iron railings set on stone-capped brick bases along the front and sides.

The interior is rectangular and galleried, exhibiting classical detailing. A segmental vaulted ceiling spans the space. Round arched arcades run along the gallery sides, supported by cast iron columns. Panelled soffits and coffered ceilings are present. The raked gallery features fine curved ironwork, bracketed and supported by cast iron columns with foliate capitals. A giant Serliana arch defines the organ chamber. Grey marble columns are incorporated into the design. The detailing of the 'great seat' mirrors the gallery arcade. The tripartite lobby windows are framed with a freestone surround and Corinthian pilasters; the central arched window has been converted into a war memorial. A schoolroom occupies the basement, characterised by iron columns.
