Description
Chapel House, formerly known as The Morgue, is a building located in Ludlow that dates back to the 18th century but has medieval origins. It is constructed of rubble with some dressed stone and brick, topped with a plain tile roof featuring a stone-coped gable parapet on the right side. The building is two stories high and has a single window range. The first floor features a 20th-century, two-light casement window set under a brick segmental arch, while the ground floor has a central 20th-century half-glazed door with an overlight, also under a brick segmental arch, flanked by two 20th-century, two-light windows.
On the right side of the building, there are two blind openings beneath reset pointed arches with drip courses, above which is a pointed arch with a drip course and a coved band. The right return side features a pointed arch with a drip course above a 20th-century wood lancet window, and another pointed arch with a drip course and coved band at the ground floor. The left gable has a blocked opening with brick quoins. The rear of the building includes four two-light casements in brickwork, and to the left, there is a blocked opening under an ashlar-faced pointed arch with a parapet above.
Inside, the building has a vaulted ceiling with chamfered ribs and a 20th-century door in the south wall beneath four central arches. To the left, there is likely a 19th-century pointed arch with a plank door. Historically, this building served as the Chapel of St Thomas of Canterbury and was restored in 1974.
