Description
The Hiles memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 30 meters south of the south transept of the Church of St Mary and St Andrew in Condover. It dates from around 1833 and is made of sandstone. The tomb is rectangular in shape and features a moulded plinth and capping, with a slightly chamfered top ledger and fluted corner pilasters. There is a recessed semi-circular inscription panel on the north side that commemorates James Hiles, who died in 1833, and another panel on the south side, dated 1836, which has fluted corner spandrels. The inscription on the south panel was largely indecipherable at the time of re-survey in 1985.
