Description

Downton Hall is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick with ashlar detailing, and has Welsh slate roofs with various 19th-century chimney stacks decorated with blue brick. The house is arranged in an "E" shape, with a further addition to the right.

The exterior presents a three-storey facade with a twelve-window range. It features late 19th-century single-pane sash windows with gauged brick flat arches, incorporating ashlar keyblocks, with 3/3 pane sashes to the second floor. A parapet includes a balustrade which incorporates a Latin motto. The ground floor has five fixed windows with upper sashes, and a storey band runs horizontally across the facade. Advanced wings feature late 19th-century 6/6 pane sashes to both the ground and first floors, and 3/3 pane sashes to the second floor. These are framed by shouldered, moulded architraves with corbelled sills, and have returned storey bands and parapets. The wing to the right has two 6/6 pane sashes to the ground and first floors, a storey band, and three 3/3 pane sashes to the second floor, topped by a parapet with ball finials. The left returned side has a late 19th-century single-pane sash in a shouldered, moulded architrave with a corbelled sill, above a 19th-century part-glazed double door and plain overlight, set beneath an enriched tympanum and moulded stone open pediment hood supported by attached columns. It is flanked by narrow 2/2 pane sashes in shouldered architraves. There are also two advanced canted bays, each with three tiers of late 19th-century single-pane sashes in shouldered, moulded architraves. A continuous storey band runs along this side, and it terminates with a returned parapet.

The rear elevation features a centrally placed margin-glazed double door and overlight, set within a moulded architrave, flanked by coved alcoves and late 19th-century single-pane sashes, all topped by a portico with two Doric columns and pilasters. Above the door is a single-pane sash. Flanking advanced bays contain 6/6 and 6/9 pane sash windows to the left, and single-pane sashes to the right. A bellcote is also present, along with a service wing to the left returned side. Original 18th- and 19th-century lead rainwater goods are found throughout the building.

The interior includes two rooms with exceptionally fine plasterwork and fireplaces. One room has walls decorated with rococo swags, trophies, roundels and relief portrait medallions, framing pictures. There is a circular entrance hall with Ionic columns and marble fireplaces, a library with fitted bookcases, and original staircases.

An attached balustrade connects the wings and flanks the steps leading to the former central entrance.
