Description
East Lodge to Downton Hall is a lodge built in 1857, constructed from coursed stone rubble with ashlar dressings. It features a hipped slate roof with deep eaves and a central brick ridge stack that has a diagonally-set cluster of four shafts and a deep oversailing cap. The plan is an octagonal block with a north wing.
The lodge is two storeys high with a basement. The octagonal section and the west side of the wing are covered by a hipped slate pentice roof, supported by rustic log-posts with braces that create a ground-floor arcade. The octagon has single-light casements with ornate leaded top lights, flat stone lintels at the ground floor, and 20th-century replacements at the first floor. There is an inset carved stone tablet dated 1857 with the initials CHRB. On the west side, there is a 20th-century two-light casement in a through-eaves gabled dormer, and a ground-floor bay window with four-light part-leaded casements and top lights above. The east side features a mezzanine level with stepped floors, a ground floor with a two-light casement and a single-light casement, and a two-light casement at the basement. The left return wall to the south includes a four-panelled entrance door with two upper glazed panels and a plain casement above with a flat stone lintel.
The interior has not been inspected. East Lodge to Downton Hall was built as part of the estate improvements of Sir Charles Henry Rouse-Boughton, along with South Lodge and West Lodge in the parish of Stanton Lacy.
