Description
Brookhouse Cottage is a former pair of houses, now a single residence, dating from the 15th and 17th centuries. It features a timber-frame structure with painted rendered infill panels set on a brick and stone plinth. A rendered brick central ridge stack is present, and a 2-bay 17th-century range was added to an earlier 3-bay range, possibly from the 15th century.
The cottage is single-storey with an attic. On the south-east entrance side, the 17th-century 2-window range has square framing with three panels high, including truss posts, a girding beam, studs, and a middle rail. It has four casement windows and a dormer, as well as a cellar entrance in the plinth. The earlier 3-bay range features square framing, partly underbuilt with brick on the left bay. The entrance door is plain boarded and located under a simple canopy, with a 2-light casement in the left bay. There is also a boarded door, a dormer opening, and a large swept tension brace in the central bay. The end bay is weatherboarded on all sides and has a lower corrugated iron roof.
On the left gable return (south-west), the square framing is restored, with posts interrupting the straight tie beam and a roof truss with weatherboarding over the collar. A 20th-century tiled hipped-roofed bay window is located at ground floor, along with a 2-light attic casement. The north-west rear side features a 2-bay 17th-century range with square framing similar to the front, including two tension braces per bay. It has three casements and one dormer with a 2-light casement per bay. The earlier range is underbuilt in brick, with a single 2-light casement and a single panel high timber framing above.
Inside, three full cruck trusses remain in the earlier range, although the end truss is truncated at tie-beam level. The later range has a single purlin roof.
