Description

The south barn at Middleton Court dates from the 17th to 19th century and is a timber-framed building with red and blue brick underbuilding, brick nogging, a brick plinth, and a tiled roof. It is oriented east-west and located on the south side of a loose courtyard, with later ancillary structures on the north elevation and west gable, and modern concrete block structures to the east.

The barn is a double-height structure with five bays. The original timber frame features small box framing that was four bays high, resting on a brick plinth. The lower half of the south elevation is built with striped red and blue brickwork, while the upper two boxes of the timber frame retain polychromatic brick nogging arranged in alternating cross and diamond patterns, along with several shuttered openings. The central bay has a pair of wide stable doors with deep strap hinges. The north elevation maintains the original four rows of box framing, with the bottom row infilled with striped brickwork and the upper rows featuring alternating patterned panels. The west gable remains intact, while the east gable has been rebuilt in brick.

Inside, the barn is five bays long, with the central bay originally used for threshing and flanked by two storage bays. The bays are defined by cross frames made up of jowled posts and braces that support queen post roof trusses, with two tiers of trenched purlins and a ridge piece. The gable trusses include two collars. Evidence suggests that diagonal struts from the sole plate to the posts were originally present but have been removed, and there are signs of an inserted floor that has since been taken out.
