Description
The lychgate at Middleton Chapel is a mid-19th century structure. It features an oak frame topped with sandstone slates and roll-moulded ridge tiles. The framed gateway has a pitched roof and a pair of gates. Each side of the gates is supported by twin posts with middle rails and boarded infilling. The design includes ogee-chamfered moulded brackets and arched braces that spring from round shafts with truncated octagonal capitals, supporting the tie, principals, and wall plates. At the top, the ridge is adorned with a central oak Greek cross. The gates themselves have a top and bottom rail with swept bracing.
