Description

The former stable block, now a dog-breeding station, is located about 20 yards west of the former Church of St Denis at The Kennels in Harewood Park. It dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and coursed sandstone rubble, featuring Welsh slate and tiled roofs. It has a square quadrangular plan with the main front facing west-north-west.

The stable block is a single storey with a two-storey gatehouse. The west elevation does not have any windows, with a central gatehouse pavilion flanked by pedimented wings. The gatehouse is cubical with a parapet and plain coping, and it has an apron above a round-headed entrance archway, which is blocked to accommodate the upper floor. The imposts of the archway continue as string courses. The flanking wings each have a similar arch that is completely blind, with strings crossing at impost level, which is lower than that of the gatehouse. The pediments have flat copings, and the gatehouse features a pyramidal slate roof with a lantern, while the pedimented ranges have tiled roofs. The side and rear portions of the quadrangle include segmental-headed openings and mid-19th century alterations. This stable block served Harewood Park, a country house that was situated nearby and demolished in the early 1950s.
