Description

HAREWOOD CP SO 52 NW 3/44 Former stable block about 20 yards west of the former Church of St Denis at The Kennels, Harewood Park

GV II

Stable block, now dog-breeding station. Late C18 to early C19 with mid-C19 alterations. Sandstone ashlar, coursed sandstone rubble with Welsh slate and tiled roofs. Square quadrangular plan with main front to west-north-west. One storey with two-storey gatehouse. West elevation has no windows, central gatehouse - pavilion flanked by pedimented wings; gatehouse is a cube with parapet and plain coping, apron above round-headed entrance arch-way, the typanum of which is blocked to accommodate upper floor, imposts of archway continue as string courses; flanking wings each have a similar arch but completely blind with strings crossing at impost level, which is lower than that of gatehouse, flat copings to pediments; gatehouse has pyramidal slate roof with lantern, pedimented ranges have tiled roofs. Side and rear portions of quadrangle have segmental headed openings and mid-C19 alterations. The stable block served Harewood Park, a country house situated nearby and demolished in the early 1950s.
