Description
The Birches Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with some early 19th century and mid-20th century alterations. It features a timber frame with brick infill, some of which is painted, and is partly clad in brick on a coursed rubble plinth beneath a hipped slate roof. The building has a T-plan layout, with a cross-wing aligned north to south and another range to the west. The main stack is made of rubble and located at the north gable.
The east front has two storeys and is jettied to the left, with the right side faced in brick. On the first floor, there are two 4-light casements over a 3-light casement to the left and another 4-light casement to the right. The entrance, located to the right of centre, features a 19th-century gabled tiled porch and a ledged and boarded door. The framing is close-studded with a mid-rail on each floor, and the jetty bressummer is chamfered. The rear wing has three square panels high with straight angle braces.
