Description

Dewsall Court is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings, featuring hipped Welsh slate roofs that have bell-casts and brick stacks. The building has an H-plan layout with the main front facing north. It includes a cellar and three storeys.

The north elevation displays a symmetrical arrangement of windows with a 1:2:1 pattern, featuring glazing bar wrought iron casements set under dressed segmental sandstone heads. The top floor windows are tripartite sashes beneath square heads. The left wing has a 3-light casement on the ground floor, while the upper windows are boarded. The entrance, located to the right of the central part, has a late 19th-century door with four panels. There are two additional entrances in the right return of the left wing, both with ledged doors; the first is at ground floor level, and the second, which leads to the first floor, is accessed by a staircase that rises from the north and is arched over the first.

The south elevation features a large glazed porch at the center, which encloses a side stack. The west elevation has a deep window that illuminates the staircase. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have balusters of a c1700 pattern on the top landing of the staircase. An oil painting, described by Pevsner as depicting the Judgement of Paris in the manner of Lely, is said to be located in the board room of Guys Hospital in London. The 17th-century panelling mentioned in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments is reported to be largely no longer in its original position.
