Description
Ark is a cottage dating from 1769, constructed of sandstone rubble and timber-frame with brick infill. It features a stone slate roof and has external sandstone rubble end stacks with brick shafts. The building has a rectangular plan oriented west-north-west to east-south-east and stands two storeys tall.
The south elevation includes three windows: two 4-light casements and a central 2-light casement, all set on a timber-framed upper floor that displays exposed studs and rails of thin scantling. The stone ground floor has a wrought iron 12-pane casement window to the left and a 9-pane window to the right. To the left of centre is a ledged 20th-century oak door. A date tablet is located beneath the central first-floor window. The frame consists of three small square panels high from the first floor to the wall-plate.
Attached to the right side is a single-storey extension made of sandstone and timber-frame, which includes a brick stack and a ledged door. The rear elevation features a lean-to extension, likely from the 19th century, with later alterations. The interior has a timber-framed cross-wall and heavy ceiling beams. The building was formerly known as Ark Cottages.
