Description
House. Dating from the mid-17th and late 17th centuries, with alterations in the 18th century and the mid- to late 19th century. Constructed of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and featuring a 20th-century tiled roof. The main range is aligned south-west to north-east with a service wing adjoining the north-east end, extending to the north-west to form an L-plan. A projecting porch is situated to the left of the centre of the main range on the north-west front. The building has two gable-end stacks, a rear lateral stack to the main range, and an axial stack to the service wing. It extends over two storeys and has attics and cellars.
The north-west front displays a string course. The left-hand gable contains a two-light mullioned window. Below, a five-light mullioned and transomed window with decorative glazing is present on the first floor. To the ground floor are a pair of similar four-light mullioned and transomed windows. Two similar gables are on the right, again with two-light mullioned windows at the top, and similar five-light mullioned and transomed windows with decorative glazing to the first floor. The ground floor windows here consist of two similar four-light windows, placed together to the right of a projecting two-storey and attic porch. The porch has a two-light mullioned window in its gable and a three-light mullioned and transomed window with decorative glazing to the first floor. A chamfered semi-circular headed doorway features moulded responds and a battened door.
The south-west face of the service wing has two two-light glazing bar casement windows and three-light mullioned and transomed windows with glazing bar casements to the ground floor. The rear of the main range has been altered but some original two-light mullioned windows remain in attic gables with leaded casements.
The interior preserves fine, moulded ceiling beams with intersecting beams in the former hall and a room to the right. Contemporary plain rectangular panelling is present in the hall. The fireplace has a wooden surround decorated with a guilloche ornament, although it has been extensively restored. A room to the left of the hall has a plastered ceiling with geometrical designs. On the first floor, a potentially re-sited section of beam with guilloche ornament and a shaped pendant can be seen.
