Description
Newchurch Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame that is partly faced in stuccoed brick, with a coursed rubble stone plinth and a rear left wing. It has a tile roof with a brick ridge and large projecting lateral stacks made of brick and stone. The farmhouse is designed in an H-plan and consists of two storeys and a cellar.
The front of the house has a four-window range, including two 3-light casements on the left and two 2-light casements on the right. On the ground floor, there are three tripartite sash windows and a part-glazed door located centrally to the right within a recessed main range. A porch and door are situated at the left end, where some square-panel framing can be seen. Similar framing is also visible at the rear of the right cross-wing, which has been restored in the 20th century. The rear of the building features a lean-to and additional 2-light and 3-light casements. Although the timber framing is said to remain on the front elevation, it is currently all covered in stuccoed brick.
Inside, the farmhouse has a stone-walled cellar, deeply chamfered cross beams, jowled posts, and a dog-leg secondary stair. The original queen-strut roof is believed to remain in part, although it has undergone restoration, including some purlins added in the early 19th century.
