Description
The Friends' Meeting House is a meeting house built in 1672 for Roger Pritchard and restored in 1957. It features a sandstone rubble plinth and a timber-frame structure with plaster infill, topped by a half-hipped tiled roof. A sandstone rubble side stack includes a baking oven. The building consists of two structural bays aligned north-west to south-west and has two levels.
On the north-east elevation, there is one window, a three-light mid-20th century steel casement, above which is a small square light. The ground floor has another steel casement with four lights to the left of center. Access is provided through a timber-framed porch on the right-hand return, which features a carved lintel above the doorway and a ledged door, likely from the 17th century, with strap hinges. The frame consists of three square panels high from the cill to the wall-plate.
Inside, there is one truss with raking struts from the collar to the principals. A short two-flight staircase has a moulded handrail and a square newel post with a finial carved into facets, along with plain flat balusters. Beneath the staircase is another ledged door, probably from the 17th century, with strap hinges. The upper level extends over the north-east half of the building and features re-used oak floorboards. The 20th-century balusters to the south-east form the edge of a gallery aligned with a sawn-off tie-beam.
