Description

The Malthouse is a house that likely dates from the 18th century, with 19th century and later alterations. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and brick, featuring a timber-frame, and has a tiled roof with sandstone rubble and brick stacks. The building has a rectangular plan consisting of seven or eight structural bays, oriented roughly east to west, and stands two storeys tall with an attic.

On the south elevation, there are two raking-top dormers, each containing a 2-light late 19th century casement window, positioned over a 19th century brick extension on the left side. The ground floor of this extension features two early 19th century wooden casements, each with three lights, situated between a glazed early 19th century porch. The central and right sections of the building, which are likely from the 18th century, have two first floor 2-light mid-19th century casements and a blocked opening to the right. The ground floor in this area has three similarly styled casements that are irregularly placed. The entrance is located on the extreme right side, slightly set back from the rest of the front, and features a mid-20th century ledged door. The west gable has a rough-cast finish.

The north elevation includes two sandstone rubble and brick stacks and a cat-slide lean-to. Inside, the 18th century part of the building showcases a variety of trusses, with two featuring curved raking struts and others having interrupted tie-beams. The 19th century section contains collar trusses, and some timber-framed walling is also present. The ground floor rooms have ceiling beams with straight-cut chamfer stops. The Malthouse is included for its group value.
