Description
The churchyard cross and base, located about 20 yards south of the chancel of Putley Parish Church, is a significant historical feature, possibly dating from the 14th century. The cross is made of dressed sandstone and consists of a shaft that has been restored and shortened. It stands on an octagonal base that is set on three steps. The west side of the base features an ogee-headed niche, and the base has pyramidical stops that transition to a square plan at the bottom. The base of the shaft also includes pyramidical stops. The head of the cross displays figures oriented towards the cardinal points: the Crucifixion faces west, St Andrew is to the north, the Virgin and Child are to the east, and a bishop is positioned to the south. This churchyard cross is notable for its surviving medieval figure sculpture.
