Description
Putley War Memorial is situated in the churchyard to the east of Putley Parish Church, which is listed at Grade II*. It is also near several other Grade II-listed churchyard monuments and a scheduled medieval churchyard cross. The memorial features a canopied oak Calvary with a corpus carved from teak. The cross shaft rises from a square, tapering stone plinth that is set on a raised platform, accessible by three steps on the east and west sides.
The front face of the plinth has an inscription dedicated to the First World War, which reads: "THIS CROSS IS DEDICATED TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE OF THE PARISH OF PUTLEY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914 - 1919."
On the left face of the plinth, the names of the First World War fallen are listed, originally four names but now five following a recent addition. This side also includes the inscription: "GRANT TO THEM O LORD ETERNAL REST AND LET LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE ON THEM. REQUIESCANT IN PACE." The right face commemorates one airman from the Second World War, with the inscription: "ALSO IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF SERGT. GEOFFREY ALBERT MAUND. R.A.F. AGED 19 YEARS. WHO GAVE HIS LIFE IN AIR-OPERATIONS ON D-DAY (6TH JUNE 1944.) WAS BURIED AT RANVILLE BRITISH CEMETERY IN FRANCE."
