Description

Lower Court is a farmhouse, possibly originating in the 16th century or earlier, that was remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries and extended in the early 19th century. The main part of the house has a timber frame clad in brick, while a projecting wing is built of coursed sandstone rubble with jamb brick dressings around the windows. Both sections are roofed with tiles, and there are two stone and brick stacks on the north side of the main range and a brick stack on the west side of the projecting wing. The house is arranged in an "L" shape, with the main range running roughly east to west, and the projecting wing attached to the west end.

The south-facing elevation has a 1:2 window arrangement. The projecting wing has glazing bar sashes, while the main range generally has 3-light mid-19th century casements. A 4-light casement is in the ground floor left-hand room. The main entrance is on the right-hand side, leading to a segmentally-headed, ledged door dating from the 18th century. A dentilled brick eaves cornice runs along the top of the south elevation. A 6-panelled 19th-century door is located in the right-hand return of the projecting wing.

Inside, the principal ground floor room, behind the 4-light casement, reveals the bases of a pair of cruck blades. The ceiling beams in this room have stop-chamfered stops with run-out stops.
