Description

Aymestrey Mill is a water grist mill built around the 1860s. It features coursed stone rubble with decorative red and blue brick accents and has a clay plain tile roof with half-hipped ends. The building has a rectangular plan, with the mill located at the southwest end of a long range.

The exterior is two storeys high with a loft and has a symmetrical southeast front that includes two windows. The windows are two-light casements topped with cambered red and blue brick arches. There are steps leading to a central doorway that has a cambered arch, plank double doors, and a gabled canopy. The first and second floors are adorned with chequered blue and red brick bands, and there is a wheel-pit on the right (northeast) side, along with a single-storey range extending beyond.

Inside the wheel-pit on the northeast side, there is a quarter breast-shot wheel with an iron axle, wooden spokes, and paddles. The mill also contains a cast-iron pit-wheel and three iron in-line gear-wheels with bevel gearing. The complete set of three stones is accompanied by wooden tuns. Additional machinery includes a wooden sack-hoist, a bolting machine, and a cleaner. The grain bins, wooden winder stairs, and roof structure remain intact. Recently, a water-powered printing press has been installed in the adjoining store on the northeast side. Aymestrey Mill is located on the River Lugg and was likely constructed by the Yatton estate.
