Description

Castle Farmhouse is probably of late 16th to early 17th century origin, with alterations in the late 20th century. It is a timber-frame building, entirely rendered and with pantiled roofs, featuring a brick ridge stack. The farmhouse follows a lobby-entry H-plan, with two-bay cross-wings located at the north-east and south-west ends, and includes a cellar, two storeys, and attics. The south-west elevation has a 1:3:1 window arrangement, with late 20th century casements of two and three lights. Casements in the gable fronts have segmental heads, and there are attic lights in the gables. Two glazed doors, both from the 20th century and sheltered by a pantiled canopy, are positioned on either side of the main range. A third glazed entry is found in a lean-to attached to the left side of the left wing. Inside, the farmhouse retains massive chamfered oak lintols and chamfered stone jambs to the two fireplaces served by the ridge stack. A cellar is situated beneath the north cross-wing. The ground floor of the main range features heavy chamfered ceiling beams, forming nine square panels. A triangular doorhead is present in the north cross-wing.
