Description
Old Country House is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 17th century and was extended in the early 20th century. It features a timber-frame construction with brick infill panels and tiled roofs, including a central stack and a local type external stack at the west end. The building has a flattened 'H' plan, consisting of a two-storey, three-bay main hall range and two slightly projecting cross-wings that frame the north front. The fenestration is irregular, with large multi-paned 19th-century casements on the left cross-wing and main range, and a three-part 12-pane metal 19th-century casement with weathering on the right cross-wing. The first floor has 12-pane 20th-century metal casements on the left-hand wing and main range, as well as an 8-pane weathered casement on the right wing.
The entrance is through a six-panelled 18th-century door located under a flat canopy in the main range, immediately to the left of the right cross-wing, leading into a cross passage. The framing is regular and heavy, with four panels high from the cill to the wall-plate; the collars and tie-beams of the north-facing cross-wings feature weatherings. Inside, there are broached chamfered beams in the left-hand front room and a very large fireplace in the main room to the left of the cross-passage, with a winder stair located at the rear of the fireplace. The left cross-wing was extended to the left and rear in the early 20th century. To the right, there is an 18th-century stable range with an interesting elliptical arch on the ground floor leading to a cattle drinking pool.
