Description

The Birley War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920. It is made of stone and features a Latin cross with cusped arms, which stands on a gently tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft is positioned on a substantial tapering square-section plinth, all resting on a single-stepped platform. The main inscription on the memorial reads: "THIS MEMORIAL CROSS/ WAS ERECTED BY/ THE PARISHIONERS/ IN SORROW AND PRIDE/ A GRATEFUL TRIBUTE TO/ (2 NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914–1919."
