Description
The Tan House is a house dating from the 15th century, with early 19th-century alterations and late 20th-century restoration. It features a timber-frame structure with rendered infill, set on a 20th-century brick plinth and underbuilt in painted brick, topped with a tiled roof. The building has a T-plan layout, with a cross-wing aligned east to west and a hall range to the north, which includes a lateral stack on the cross-wing.
The west front displays a gabled cross-wing to the right, which was formerly jettied, and has two storeys. It features a 2-light casement window above a 3-light casement window. To the left, there is a one-storey range with an attic that is lit by a gabled dormer. The ground floor has a single-light casement window to the left and a 3-light casement window to the right. The entrance, located in the angle, is sheltered by a lean-to tiled porch from the 20th century. The timber framing consists of three square panels high and has been much restored. The west gable of the cross-wing includes curved angle braces supporting a cambered tie-beam and three struts to the collar, with trenched purlins. Although the interior was not inspected, it has been reported that the hall range has a smoke-blackened roof.
