Description

The barn on the west side of the farmyard at Bollitree Castle, built in the mid-18th century, features elements from medieval architecture and is designed in a Gothick style. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The west wall of the barn, which faces the farmhouse, is symmetrical and includes round corner turrets and semi-octagonal turrets flanking a central archway. A moulded string course divides the facade into two storeys, with a second moulded string below the parapet. Each half of the facade consists of two bays, featuring moulded pointed windows on the ground floor topped with ogee hoods adorned with poppyheads. Between the bays, there is a round-headed doorway with a rusticated ashlar surround. The upper storey has blind cusped vesica-shaped openings in each bay, with two additional openings above the archway, some of which retain diamond-leaded glazing. Above each doorway, there are carved corbels positioned below the lower string course, and above the central archway, two corbels support a third central corbel that carries a re-used section of moulded respond. The north wall is embattled and features mock towers at each end, with the right-hand tower forming the gable wall of the barn. Each tower has two round corner turrets and moulded pointed windows on the first floor. The left-hand tower includes a ground floor doorway with a rusticated ashlar surround and a pointed head. On the east side, a rubble wall borders the road. Inside, the southern end of the barn contains a stable, with woodwork in the stalls that features a blank arcade of pointed arches and re-used jetty and console brackets from the 16th and 17th centuries. The roof trusses have interrupted tie-beams.
