Description
The Old Rectory is a house dating from around 1700, constructed of sandstone ashlar and featuring a hipped tilt roof. The building has a symmetrical design with two storeys and an attic, comprising three bays on each side of a central section. The facade includes a plinth, two horizontal bands, and coved eaves. The windows are boxed sashes with glazing bars, and there are three gabled dormers in the attic. The entrance features a six-panelled door within a doorcase, which is described as "modern" by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments. This doorcase has an architrave, a triglyph frieze, and a segmental pediment. Above the first floor, there is an oval panel adorned with cherub heads, a dove, and an open book inscribed with the words "Dominus illuminatio mea." The building has chimneys on both the left and right sides, positioned behind the ridge. At the rear, there are two wings; the northern wing is rendered, while the southern wing has straight joints and appears to be a later addition to the main structure. Inside, there are some chamfered ceiling beams. The dog-leg staircase features a closed string, turned balusters, and newels topped with ball finials. On the first floor landing, there is a plaster ceiling with a moulded border and fleurs-de-lis in the corners.
