Description

This is a row of mid-19th century houses located on Union Street, Hereford. The building comprises numbers 4 to 8, forming a consecutive terrace. Built of brick with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof, it features four brick stacks, though only one remains at number 5.

The building is three storeys high with cellars, and has a five-window front. The windows are margin-glazed sashes, though these have been removed from numbers 4 and 5. Blind, round-headed openings with ashlar reveals are located to the right. A coved band runs along the front, with a similar band above it. A stone cornice tops the building, and a stone-coped parapet sits above the cornice.

The entrances are on the right side and feature four-panel doors with plain fanlights set within stucco surrounds. The windows to the left have corbelled sills, stucco reveals, and coved lintels. There are also stucco quoins. A shopfront is located centrally with a part-glazed panelled door, flanked by plain windows, and a curved return to the right. The entrance to number 8 is on the returned side, with a row of margin-glazed sashes and blind openings above.

The rear of the building has margin-glazed sashes, as well as 20th-century metal casements. A wing with a hipped roof extends from number 8. The terrace is notable for its unusual level of preservation as a complete residential row.
