Description
The Elms is a farmhouse that dates back to the 17th century, although it was mostly rebuilt from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and restored in the 1980s. The structure features a timber frame with rendered infill, which has been refronted in brick. It has a graduated slate roof at the front and a plain slate roof at the rear. The building is designed in a T-plan, with a rear wing to the east that originates from the 17th century and a cross-wing from the 18th century that runs north to south.
The main chimney stack is centrally located towards the north end of the 18th-century range and has a brick shaft. The east front is two storeys high and features a dentilled brick cornice. There are four windows with 16-pane boxed sashes set under rubbed brick heads with stone sills. The ground floor includes boxed glazing bar sashes. The central entrance is highlighted by a pedimented and pilastered doorcase that contains a six-panel door, which is sheltered by a 19th-century open trellis porch.
The rear wing's framing consists of four square panels, with a gable-end truss that has intersecting diagonal bracing forming lozenges. Inside, there is a staircase from the late 18th to early 19th century that features stick balusters, and several rooms have simple plaster cornices.
