Description

Dukes Farmhouse and the adjoining barn is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with additions from the 17th century and extensive remodeling during the mid-19th century and early 20th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The main house is aligned northeast to southwest and faces southeast, featuring a stack that likely backs onto a former through-passage, with additional gable-end stacks and wings extending to the rear at either end. The 17th-century dairy wing is attached to the barn on the northwest side.

The southeast front of the farmhouse is single-storey with an attic, showcasing three dormer windows fitted with 20th-century two-light casements. Similar windows flank a doorway that is topped by a gabled porch, with an over-light and a ledged door. At the rear of the northeast wing, there are two wooden framed three-light windows with diamond-shaped mullions. On the east face of the northwest wing, there is a wooden framed doorway with a segmental head next to a window that formerly had diamond-shaped mullions but is now cut at the base.

Inside the northeast wing and main house, there are cruck trusses, mostly with cut tie-beams, and extensive smoke blackening in the northeast wing. A stone winder staircase with oak treads is located against a central axial stack that is blocked at the upper level. There is a ledged door with surface fillets, and the probable former main doorway, now enclosed by a later passage, features a heavy chamfered wooden frame with half-pyramidal stops and a four-centred head. The northwest dairy wing includes timber-framed internal partitions and an external stair leading to an upper room, as well as a small fireplace with a corbelled bressummer.

The barn, which is attached to the dairy on the northwest, has been extensively rebuilt, retaining one 17th-century truss with vertical struts from the tie-beam to the collar and V-struts above. The barn is included for its group value.
