Description

Fownhope Court is a country house, now divided into separate dwellings. The house largely dates to the 17th century, with significant remodelling in the 19th century and alterations in the 20th. It is constructed from rendered sandstone rubble and brick, with slate roofs and decorative brick chimney shafts. The building has an L-shaped layout, with the main range running north-west to south-east, facing southwest. A rear wing extends to the northeast. Chimneys are located along the main axis of the main range, towards the northwest and southeast, with a lateral chimney to the rear, and a further axial stack to the rear service wing. The original main entrance was in the centre of the southwest front. The house has two storeys, an attic and a cellar. The southwest front features two gabled bays flanking a narrow central bay. 20th-century windows are in the gables. The left side of the front has two 3-light mullioned and transomed windows, while the right side has a similar window and a 4-light window, to the outer bay of a central 2-light window. The window on the left return may be from the 17th century. A window to the left projects on a moulded base with a pointed arch-headed doorway below, which contains French casements. The right outer bay has a canted bay window. The gables feature mock timbering with decorative bargeboards. The interior is not accessible.
