Description

The gatehouse attached to the west end of The Grange dates from the 14th and 17th centuries, with later alterations. It is constructed of roughly squared sandstone with sandstone dressings, timber-frame elements featuring plaster and brick infill, and weatherboarding. The roof is tiled, and the building has a rectangular plan oriented east to west, standing two storeys tall.

On the south elevation, there is one opening on the right side of the upper floor, which consists of a row of square-framed panels filled with brick. A full-height entry is located to the left of center. To the left of this entry, there is a restored cross-casement window under a cambered head. The extreme right features a two-light casement window, and to its left, there is a ledged 20th-century door and a two-leaved door. Attached to the left is a lower extension, likely from the mid-19th century, which includes a ledged door and a two-light transom light under a cambered head.

The north elevation showcases a 14th-century chamfered two-centred arch and a jettied upper floor with exposed framing, supported by curved brackets resting on a cill beam with moulded corbels. The interior has not been inspected.
