Description
Moreton Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Lugg and a side stream, likely built in the 16th or 17th century and altered in the mid-19th century. The bridge is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and is aligned roughly east-west. The approach parapets are splayed to the west and north-east, but not to the south-east. There are two cutwaters, each featuring refuges behind shapes that correspond with the parapets on either side. The north-east cutwater extends about five meters with masonry that reinforces the bank separating the River Lugg from its side stream. The bridge has three spans; the two eastern spans have semi-circular heads that spring from a low water level, while the western span, likely enlarged in the 19th century, has a segmental head that springs from jambs positioned well above the water level. The parapets are flat-topped, except for the north-east parapet, which has a semi-circular section coping.
