Description

The Old Cobblers Shop and adjoining two dwellings, located about 50 yards southeast of the Church of St James, is a former cobblers shop and two dwellings that have been combined into one house. This building dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with painted brick and rendered infill, resting on a 20th-century brick base at the eastern end. The roof is slate and has been raised on the south side.

The structure consists of five framed bays aligned east to west and has two external rubble chimneys with offsets and brick stacks on the south elevation. It is single storey with an attic, but the roof has been raised to a two-storey height on the south elevation.

The north front elevation shows that the cobblers shop occupies the eastern end and includes three multi-paned 19th-century windows. Below the central and right windows is a large folding shelf, and there is a segmental-shaped sign above the windows. Other windows include a 20th-century single-light casement, a three-light casement, and a three-light 19th-century casement. A 20th-century gabled timber porch with square side lights and a 20th-century door is attached to the second bay from the eastern end, along with a 19th-century ledged and battened door at the eastern end. There is also a lean-to 20th-century addition at the east end of the rear elevation. Inside, the building features stop-chamfered main ceiling beams.
