Description
The Bennett Monument, located about 50 yards south-east of the Church of St Mary, is a pedestal tomb dedicated to Fanny Bennett, who died in 1842. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a moulded base and capping. The monument is topped with a pyramidical finial that is decorated with a ball-flower frieze. Recessed inscription panels are situated between corner colonettes that support acanthus capitals. Additionally, the fluted frieze beneath the cornice also displays ball-flower decoration. This monument is an interesting early Victorian example of an archaeological design that combines established themes with a renewed local Gothic tradition, particularly through the use of ball-flowers. It is surrounded by a dwarf wall.
