Description
This cow house and hayloft, located about 20 yards north of Paytoe Hall, likely dates from the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It features a sandstone rubble base that supports a weatherboarded timber frame and has a Welsh slate roof. The structure consists of five bays arranged in a north-west to south-east alignment and has two levels.
The south-west elevation displays a weatherboarded upper section, while the ground floor includes six ledged doors and two 2-light openings on the right side. The north gable features a central loft opening and two-leaved ledged doors below it. Inside, there are several trusses with collars supported by queen struts, and one truss includes scissor-braces, from which a pair of struts extend to the principals, running parallel with the upper part of the scissor-brace. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England notes that some ashlar may have originated from Wigmore Abbey.
